Sketch Dump: Nothing in particular

A random sketch dump. I was trying to experiment with scale a bit and came up with some bigger beefier biker beasts:

Sketch Dump: Concepts and Color Roughs

Posted in Artwork, GameDev on August 22, 2011 | No Comments »

I decided that it’s important to fit a bit more T&A into my Seven Guns concepts:

I’m also playing around a bit with color, although I haven’t figured out yet if I want to have it flat and gritty or more rendered. I’ll need to work on some target screenshots to get a better handle on that before I get sucked into the coloring rabbit hole.

I’m putting “Rebuild the Black Warp demo in Unity” back on my list of things to do so I’ll be putting up art from that in the near future, just to remind myself of all the neat stuff sitting unused in sketchbook world.

Enemy Sketch Dump

Now that I have so much free time I’m starting back up with my game development! I’m currently working on 2 games: one super simple and one that’s more complex.

Simple game is a simple dodging game that I’m building with the Unity3D engine as a learning project that I will be able to publish to the web, and maybe iOS if I get that far.

Complex game will be a spinoff of my unfinished comic project Seven Guns of the Old Gods. I’ll mostly be working on animation and style tests in Photoshop and Blender, with the goal of finding a programmer and animator to help turn it into something more.

Here’s some sketches from Complex Game. It has a heavy metal inspired art style and will include lots of brushy hand drawn art. I’ll also figure a way out to include large portrait art on screen occasionally, similar to what I’ve seen in lots of Japanese games but less cutesy/Lolita.

More to come in the future…

Dragon Carrier

Dragon Carrier art

I just wrapped up this artwork for Ray Barnholdt’s Scroll magazine. It turned out well, even though every time I sit down to color a new piece I instantly forget how to do it and have to relearn everything. I really need to sit down with some smaller pieces and get a better grip on what my color style is. I’ll probably have prints up in my shop soon.

Work in Progress: Interactive Comics of Some Sort

Posted in Artwork on March 29, 2011 | 1 Comment »

I really want to pick up my old unfinished comic projects and do something with them, but I have zero interest in creating a physical book to sell at conventions and I work too damn slow to keep any readership on a webcomic. I figure it will be much more interesting to create something digital that is heavily tied to physical inked art.

This is a quick test to see how panels transition from one screen to the next in an interesting fashion. It’s built in Flash, with the intent to move to the iPad later down the road. The first batch of content will be linear, but I hope to branch out into more interactive works.

Check it out: http://public.cschons.com/comic1/MediaPiece.html

I’m really happy with the initial results, so know it’s on to actually finishing up the art and making some additions to account for the new format. I’ve got 3 existing stories that I’m hoping to give a new home this way.

The first batch of zombies was a bit too heavy on the testosterone so this time it’s all about the ladies.

Row 2: Kiss-o-gram Cop, Bikini Girl, Savage Warrior Princess.

Bonus: 3 more dudes!

The only row: Time Traveller #11, Time Traveller #4, and Scent Salesman.

Custom Project: Mass Effect 2 Grunt

Posted in Artwork on February 20, 2011 | 1 Comment »

I recently got asked by Anthony Gallegos of Eat-Sleep-Game.com to create a special plush character, the Grunt from Mass Effect 2. This gave me a nice test bed to try out some custom work and experiment with a more varied shape. The project turned out really well and I thought I show some of the process involved…

Design Dump: Podcast Appreciation

Posted in Artwork on December 27, 2010 | No Comments »

I got a bit of a design bug so I started working on some potential T-Shirt designs for a few of the podcasts I listen to. They’re coming along nicely and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to turn them into real products in the spring.
