Custom Project: Mass Effect 2 Grunt

I recently got asked by Anthony Gallegos of Eat-Sleep-Game.com to create a special plush character, the Grunt from Mass Effect 2. This gave me a nice test bed to try out some custom work and experiment with a more varied shape. The project turned out really well and I thought I show some of the process involved…

The initial idea was to create a plush version of one of the Mass Effect 2 characters, either Rex or a grunt. I got pretty far along with the Rex art only to find out that the lady who it was intended for preferred the Grunt, so back to the drawing board for a few quick revsions. In the end I am more partial to the armor design on the grunts anyway so it worked out well. I may have to go back to the Rex art and finish it up for fun sometime.

The Naked Test Dummy

I made this guy to make sure the shape turned out right. The first test had weird pointy shoulders so I had to round them off a bit to look nice. I didn’t bother stuffing his legs all of the way so he’s a bit wobbly for now.

The Printed Fabric Version

Here’s the color grunt all cut out and ready to go. I pinned the printed fabric and fleece backing together and drew guide lines for sewing the rounded edges. Normally those guidelines are included in the printed art, but I was playing it by ear with this unique shape.

All Sewn Up

The edges get trimmed and then it’s time to flip it right side out!

A Noble Sacrifice

The test dummy gets cannibalized so that the color grunt can live. He proudly gives up his innards in the line of duty.

Finished Plush and Friends

The finished grunts!
He’s all done. You can see the two smaller test guys hanging out with him.

Final Thoughts

Grunty here was fairly involved and took a lot longer than I thought. My initial plush designs went through several revisions in order to get the squared off shape to work right so this new shape was a nice change of pace. The primary challenge was the big round head and making sure the shoulder armor wasn’t too pointy. It’s always a bit tricky to make a nice piece of original art that will translate well to a three dimensional shape.

In the end it turned out great and I hope they like.
